In “Producing Food for Our Future,” we meet dairy farmers Sarah and Chris Ficken, who own and operate New Moon Farms in Munnsville, N.Y. Due to their sustainable farming practices, New Moon Farms has achieved carbon neutrality.
“Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future,” says Chris Ficken. “We do no-till farming and focus on soil health. We also focus heavily on harvesting when soil conditions are right to avoid compaction and build the soil’s organic matter.”
Much effort also goes into creating flourishing edge habitat around their fields, providing ecology for birds and small mammals to thrive.
“When we sat down before we had the farm, we decided what sustainability meant to us. And it really means building a world in which the future is better than what it is right now,” Sarah says.
